Day 10 - Las Herrerias to Fillobal

Las Herrerias to Fillobal

Distance: 15 miles / 25 kms

Goal for the Day

Climb the 700 meters to O Cerebrieo, and possibly descend again

Meaningful Moment

The beautiful peaks and valleys of Galicia

Random Thought of the Day

Another wonderful picnic at 1300 metres alongside pre Roman hutches.

On the Road

Linda and I stayed at a private albergue last night. It was a bit more expensive but well worth it. We had a good night's sleep. We awoke to a beautiful day, got dressed and started our home.

The challenge was that we immediately faced a700 meter, 2100 foot climb. It was exhilarating to challenge body and mind, but it was also physically demanding. I knew that I could do it, but at what cost.

We started the climb around 8 and finished around noon. I was drenched in sweat, but I met the goal. Don't sell yourself short. Be realistic about your abilities and then go forward and onward.

The rest of the day was about how far we would go. We had several options and it turns out that by 6 on, exhausted and dragging, we reached a fine stopping place for the night.

Leaving Las Herrerias

Linda and I often seemed to be behind other hikers.
Leaving
They would pass us soon enough.

Galicia is so much greener than Castile y Leon.

Some town
Part of our 700 meter ascent

Thankful for the parts that weren't so steep.
The vistas were simply incredible when on foot.

Alistair, from England
This is a special marker. From here on, the distance to Santiago is given every kilometer or so. Before this the distance is rarely given.

We are still going up ... And up.
I have entered the autonomous community of Galicia. Santiago is the capital.
The church at O Cebreiro. This is the highest point on the Camino at 1300 meters.

The view over Galicia from O Cebreiro

After a long descent, another tough climb back up. How did they do it in olden times? One step at a time ...

Linda and I at San Roque
In La Faba

Not exactly the running of the bulls, but you can see how close by they passed me. Close enough that I was nervous at some of them who looked me right in the eye.
